WHO IS B E D D R U ?
Italian self-taught painter Beddru has carved a distinctive place in contemporary art through his conceptual exploration and bold experimentation with non-traditional materials, particularly thick, layered plexiglas panels. His figurative subjects are portrayed in an "unconformable" manner using ink-based mixed media, applied with a reverse painting technique reminiscent of 17th-century Italian masters. By developing his own variation of this method, Beddru emphasizes the use of vivid pigments to infuse his works with a signature vibrancy.
In addition to plexiglas, Beddru also paints on canvas, working with oil and acrylic techniques to further expand his expressive range. His artistic inquiry often revolves around themes such as the gender gap, and he seeks to normalize perceptions of desire, pleasure, and human connection—challenging conventional narratives through visual storytelling.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork offers a critical reflection on society and human life over time. Growing up in a cross-cultural environment, I often reference Sicily and its symbols, blending popular culture, myth, and a lucid view of the present. I explore themes such as the gender gap, gender bias, and our connection to Nature. While my subjects may lose their individual appearances, my focus remains on the shared essence of humanity, beyond origin, fortune, or misfortune. Though I work with various materials and techniques, my approach remains consistent: I draw inspiration from the past while addressing contemporary subjects with equally modern materials. Each body of work often develops around specific themes, with research playing a key role in aligning my curiosity, thought, and hand to create the next series. |
